April 21 Bird Study with Pam Huntley
April 25 Field Trip to Pt. Cabrillo Lighthouse (8:45 to 11:50)
April 23 Local History Projects due

Thanks to Mark Oakney, our fabulous art teacher provided by MUSE, the students have a show of their art at the Mendocino Art Center. The art is on display from Dec. 5 to Jan. 5. The students were chosen at random and were asked which piece of art they wanted to show. There were five students chosen from our class.
Last week we went on a field trip to the Art Center to do a ceramics class and a painting class. We also had a tour of the Art Center and saw the wonderful art from all grade levels from all over Mendocino County.
During the Winter Break it would be extremely helpful if the students practiced their multiplication facts. We have been working with multiplication and division and with place value in whole numbers and decimals.
Wishing you and your families a Healthy, Happy Holiday.

Beginning this week children will have recess before eating lunch. This will allow them to begin playing right after the bell rings. They will have the same number of minutes for lunch and play, they will just play before they eat. We will try this for three weeks, then discuss how it went.
Susan, Emily Symonds mother, has been helping us every Friday with her expertise in science. We have been studying bacteria, aand have done several experiments. Now we are studying weather and have made a rain gauge and a thermometer (or something that shows how a thermometer works).
Soon Pamela Allen, Tristan's mother, will teach our class how to knit. The students will make their own needles, but if they have them from last year it would be helpful to bring them in. If you are a knitter and would like to help, please let me know. Pamela will be teaching knitting at 11:00 on Mondays. We could use yarn, if you have any extra.
Photo make-up day is Tuesday Oct. 23.
We have begun our study of the Pomo as part of our local history. The students seem quite eager to learn about the Pomo. At the conclusion of their study they will make a Pomo village for a homework project. It will be due November 13.
The MUSE raffle is in the final stages. MUSE is doing so much for our schools this year, including funding Mark Oatney, our K-8 art teacher. You can help by selling tickets (and/or buying tickets). The drawing is October 31 at the Fireman's Halloween Party at Crown Hall.
This weekend three generations of local musicians performed in a benefit for MUSE. Julia Bloyd, Emma's mom. is our MUSE liaison. She helped by baking brownies for the benefit. If you would like to be more involved with MUSE activities let me know.

Last week Evo Bluestein is taught folk dancing to all the K-8 students. The students thoroughly enjoyed it. On Friday there was a Barn dance with all the students from 10:45 to 11:45. Many parents joined us. Since the outlying schools came in for the dance, we invited the six third graders from Albion School to join our class. We read together and played math games together. So far this month we have gone to the beach, had Photo Day, read with our 7th grade Reading Buddies, and had Back to School. We are studying earthworms and are watching them in our worm columns. We are studying weather and recording the morning and afternoon temperatures outside our classroom. Friday this week we will go to the Middle School gym at 1:30 to listen to the Symphony of the Redwoods perform for all the 1st through 8th graders. We have been listening to the music of Beethoven and Mozart in preparation. I am enjoying this class immensely. They are lively, interesting and usually focussed. Parent Conferences are the week of Oct. 8-12.
