Mendocino K-8 Art
It’s an exciting time for the K-8 art program led by Mark Oatney. Our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade art is on display now through June 8th at the Frankie’s for our annual show. The variety of media on display and the number of students who have artwork on display is impressive - over 150 pieces in all. Media examples include ceramics, cartoons, collage, digital art, acrylic painting, and photography.
The Mendocino community supports the arts and we are so proud of our art program. Our students take advantage of the unique opportunities Mark offers them. In addition to taking part in community art shows and events, Mark gets our students out of the classroom on field trips.
Just this past week, Mark took all of his 6th-8th grade art students to San Francisco to visit the Exploratorium. Organizing the trip is no small feat. From coordinating transportation to securing funding, this trip has been planned all year and it is a special one. Thanks to Linda Freeling for helping to chaperone the trip and the Mendocino Coast Children’s Fund for helping with scholarship money to make the trip possible for everyone!
Our halls, library, and main office are adorned with our student artwork. It brightens up our school! Early in the year, I spotted a piece on the walls created by four of our 5th grade students. It’s a picture of the moon over the ocean and details waves crashing into the cliffs. The minute I saw it I knew I wanted it and went straight to the art room to see how I could make that happen. Mark told me those pictures are usually given away at the end of the year. I am glad I have my name on it! It’s going to look great in my office.
